USER RESEARCH

Getting our hands dirty

METHODOLOGY

I asked a variety of users to finger paint, and to try gestures on paper, with their fingers wet with paint. This method gave us a concrete, physical means to capture movement and gesture, while allowing participants to show us their comfort or discomfort completing a gesture in the space they have.

We had dimensions of upcoming laptop touchpads, and we contrasted which gestures would work where. Users were asked to think of what they wanted to do with their apps and windows, and to move their hand in a means that made them think of that action, as a method of deriving natural interactions.

INSIGHT

Window Management

The push & pull understanding of managing space and one's gathered windows was a unique insight from the research conducted. Pushing one's hand forward often gave the impression of stepping back, to see more (of your open windows).

RESULT

Years later, the precision touchpad leap forward for laptops was the biggest step for touchpads. Since then, due to ergonomic and hardware limitations, small details have improved, but not the overall precision touchpad. As a result of this, and the overall adaptability of the gesture set, the set has not been changed since it's design.
